Project Cambria is currently one of the most talked about things in the world of VR. Very little is known about it, aside from the fact that it will play a key role in determining the future of Virtual Reality.
Project Cambria: what is it?
The mysterious Project Cambria is the next headset to be released by Meta, the tech company formerly known as Facebook. It was initially announced in October 2021 during meta’s Connect 2021 video, along with several other projects that are currently in development at Meta.
What will it be capable of?
In the handful of videos and teasers released by Meta, Project Cambria is shown to be equipped with an extensive arsenal of features that are a significant step up from what Meta’s previous Oculus headsets are capable of.
The largest feature that sets Project Cambria apart from Meta’s previous Quest headsets is its ability to have high fidelity full colour passthrough where the Oculus Quest and Quest 2 can only provide the user with a grainy black and white display. Full colour passthrough will allow for a more enriched and immersive augmented reality experience.
Project cambria will certainly have the most enhanced optics that Meta has ever put in one of their headsets. The headset will be equipped with pancake optics, which consists of multi-layered lenses that reflect light over and over to produce the optimal display.
A further enhancement to the overall immersion will be sensors built into the headset that will be able to track movements of the eyes and face. This will allow the user’s avatar to be more responsive and realistic. These trackers could also potentially allow for a huge variety of additional capabilities, such as additional input methods that users will utilise to interact with the world around them, or foveated rendering, in which the device fully renders only what the user is looking at, which will increase the overall speed and performance of the device.
However, how much of this technology will actually be implemented in Project Cambria is still widely debated.
In addition to the new, advanced improvements, Project cambria will also have enhanced functionality with the Presence Platform, a developer-focused set of tools and machine perception capabilities. In the video below, Meta briefly explains how Project Cambria’s highly improved functionality will impact the way users will interact with Presence Platform.

When will Project Cambria be released?
While exact details regarding Project Cambia’s release date are still unknown, the device is speculated to be released to the public later in 2022.
Meta has already stated that Project Cambria will be aimed at developers, and will most likely be on the higher end of the price spectrum. It is said that it will most likely cost approximately $1000 or more at the time of its release.
What else is Meta working on?
While Project Cambria is the next step in enhancing humanity’s relationship with technology, Meta has far more ambitious plans in store for the coming years. Project Nazare is the nickname for a fully functional pair of Augmented Reality glasses currently in development by Meta. Unfortunately, there is still very little information about it, besides that we know that it still has quite a way to go before actually being released to the public.[PAYLOAD_MEDIA:5:project-aria.png:Project Aria:]
